Jackie provided excellent guidance on improving stroke technique (although changing stroke can be a challenge for an ‘older swimmer’).
She always managed to make the training sessions enjoyable and this provided the motivation to train even when the weather was a little unpleasant.
Although I was not a fast swimmer, Jackie made sure that I never felt out of place training alongside with much better swimmers (also training for Ocean Swims) . Jackie has the skill of making swimmers of all levels feel included.
When I first started in Jackie’s squad, I was unable to complete a tumble turn, let alone complete a whole squad session. Jackie was my coach for 5 years.
It was her ability to motivate me; it was her ability to break down my stroke to identify which aspects needed improvement and how to become more powerful and efficient in the water; it was the environment she created each session with swim sets aimed toward achieving my goals that made me come back for all those years.
I wanted to be in the pool at 5am each morning. Jackie created that drive within; she made me enjoy swimming. I went from barely being able to complete a lap to competing at state level.
